Privacy policy
www.carbon.place (“This site”) is operated by the Energy Demand Research Centre project on behalf of the University of Leeds and the University of Sussex. We are committed to protecting the privacy and security of your personal information (‘personal data’). This policy describes how we collect and use your personal data during your use of our site, in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and associated data protection legislation.
Who is using your personal data?
The University of Leeds is the “data controller” for the information that you provide to us when visiting this website. This means that we decide how to use it and are responsible for looking after it in accordance with the GDPR.
Access to your data within the University will be provided to those staff who need to view it as part of their work in connection with the operation of this website. Please read the following carefully to understand our views and practices regarding your personal data and how we will treat it. We may update this policy at any time.
By visiting our site, you are accepting and consenting to the practices described in this policy.
Types of data we collect about you
Anonymous data, if you consent to our use of cookies. We will retain and evaluate information on your recent visits to our website and how you move around different sections of our website for analytics purposes, to understand how people use our site so that we can make it more intuitive.
Personal data, only where you enter it yourself. That means your name on the Land Ownership Explorer, and anything you write in the feedback form. The next section explains both.
When we collect your data
On most of this website we do not collect personal data about you, only anonymous technical information about your visit from your computer.
There are two exceptions, and in both cases you choose whether to provide the information:
- The Land Ownership Explorer asks for your name before showing the map, and records the time of your visit. We are required to do this by the HM Land Registry licence, which obliges us to keep End-User Records so that compliance can be audited. If you would rather not give your name, do not use that tool; every other tool on this site works without it.
- The feedback form collects whatever you choose to write in it, including any contact details you supply.
How we use your data
We process your data to ensure that we understand how our site is used. Information processed for this purpose is collected through Google Analytics.
Google Analytics is not loaded at all until you accept cookies. Until you choose “OK” in the banner, no analytics cookies are set and nothing about your visit is sent to Google. If you choose “No”, we record that choice in a cookie so that we do not ask again, and analytics stay switched off on every later visit.
Sharing your data with third parties
We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with anyone for their own purposes. Some data does pass through third parties who process it on our behalf, and one may have to be disclosed:
- Google receives analytics data through Google Analytics, but only if you have consented to cookies. The name you enter on the Land Ownership Explorer is also recorded using Google Apps Script.
- Microsoft hosts the feedback form, which runs on the University of Leeds' Microsoft Forms tenancy.
- HM Land Registry may require us to disclose the End-User Records described above as part of an audit of our compliance with their licence. We will not release them for any other reason.
Where we store or use your data
We may store data collected by the website manually or electronically. Google Analytics data is stored securely by Google in a cloud-based service, while any analysis of that data is stored on our secure servers and/or in our premises within the UK.
Third party websites
Our site contains links to and from various third-party websites. If you follow a link to any of these websites, please note that these websites have their own privacy policies and that we do not accept any responsibility or liability for these policies. Please check these policies before you submit any personal data to these websites.
Retaining your data
We will only retain your data for as long as we need it to fulfil our purposes, including any relating to legal, accounting, or reporting requirements.
Your rights
You have the option to refuse analytics cookies which will prevent your visit to our website being recorded for our records. Please note that use of the Land Ownership Explorer automatically enables Google Analytics cookies to comply with the terms of the Land Registry Licence.
